A uniformed 'Jan Militia' commander of the Naxalites was killed on Tuesday in a gunfight with the police in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh, said Inspector General S.R.P. Kalluri.
The police had been patrolling the area in and around Kandanar village in Bastar after an incident of killing by the Naxalites, Kalluri and Superintendent of Police R.N. Dash said.
"While returning, they had an encounter in Chandemeta forest with the Naxalites. The gunfight lasted on and off for about an hour by which time the Naxalites fled the scene," Dash said.
Later, the police found in the area the body of the 'Jan Militia' commander, identified as Machkot LGS (Local Guerrilla Squad) member Arjun, they said.
The police also recovered a large quantity of ammunition, some Naxalite literature, and articles of everyday use.
Arjun was wanted for the killing of two CRPF troopers in 2014 as well as killing of as many as 12 civilians.

'Jan Militia' is a part-time fighting force, raised by a Naxalite or Maoist group, in charge of a village, according to the security forces.
