The city bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) is expected to be functional in the next 10-15 days following the government notifying its constitution on June 1, a top Corporate Affairs Ministry (MCA) official said on Monday.
"The Kolkata bench will be functional in the next 10-15 days depending on the posting of officers. Some officers are already posted and some are yet to be posted," said ministry director R.C. Meena at an interactive programme with MCC Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
The government notified the constitution of NCLT and the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on June 1, aiming to resolve corporate disputes faster and to improve the ease of doing business in India.
The NCLT starts with 11 benches - two in New Delhi and one each in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Kolkata.
The Guwahati bench is operational but has a few cases, said Meena, adding he would suggest to the ministry that it be merged with Kolkata.
He also said the ministry has been receiving a number of applications from companies to shift their headquarters from the city.
