The National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik asking him to initiate speedy investigation in the harassment faced by journalist Barkha Dutt on social media.

In her letter to the Delhi Police Commissioner, NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote that Dutt has allegedly complained to the NCW about receiving abusive messages as she offered to help Kashmiris being targeted in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack.

"It is further reported that she tweeted to the Delhi Police apprising them of the harassment," the letter read.

The Commission has asked the Delhi Police Commissioner to apprise them of the action taken as per law through email or fax.

Dutt later tweeted thanking the Commission for taking up the matter with the Delhi Police. "Thank you NCW and Rekha Sharma for raising this with Delhi Police. I await the response of Delhi Police -- I have filed my formal complaint with them yesterday," she wrote.

"I had close to 1,000 abusive messages and calls in a coordinated and violent mob attack. These included a message to shoot me, a nude photo, many sexually abusive messages. I outed the men who did this. Twitter locked me till many of the details were taken down," she said.
