Nepal's largest political party, the Nepali Congress, plans to take a leading role in the promulgation of the new constitution by Jan 22 at any cost, the party said Friday.

It made the decision at a time when criticism is mounting that the largest party is not playing a constructive role in constitution drafting.

The Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting of the party was held here Thursday-Friday, allowing flexibility on key contentious issues of the constitution, Xinhua reported.

As the largest party in the 601-seat house, the party is holding consultations with the opposition parties on disputed issues.

Parties have pledged to finalise the new constitution by Jan 22, but issues, including federalism, form of government, judiciary and electoral system, remain unsettled.
