The first day of the new year brought respite from the intense cold, as the maximum temperature was recorded at 21.6 degrees Celsius. The Met Office has forecast a cloudy day Friday.

Thursday's minimum temperature was two notches above average at 8.8 degrees Celsius, even as moderate fog delayed 41 trains.

According to Northern Railway, 41 trains coming to the capital were running late due to the fog, 17 were rescheduled and 18 were cancelled.

"The sky will remain partly cloudy Friday with moderate fog," said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

Friday's maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 21 and 9 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Wednesday's minimum temperature was 8.6 degrees Celsius, slightly above the season's average, while the maximum was 18.5 degrees Celsius, two notches below average.
