A newborn girl, abandoned by her family under a flyover here, was rescued and admitted to a hospital on Wednesday, police said.

"A day old baby was found under Munirka flyover in south Delhi on Wednesday morning," said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Nupur Prasad.

Wrapped in a plastic bag, the baby was found lying on the footpath by a passer-by who informed the police.

The baby has been kept in AIIMS private ward nursery, and been named "Swadha" by the police.

"We have named her 'Swadha', which means 'divine approval of god'," said Prasad.

The police have registered a case under section 317 of Indian Penal Code which deals with 'exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years' and have launched a manhunt for the parents.
