National Film Development Corporation's (NFDC) Hindi language feature "Island City" garnered applause and received a standing ovation at the 72nd Venice Film Festival. The film was premiered worldwide at the festival.

The directorial debut of Ruchika Oberoi, the film featuring Vinay Pathak, Tannishtha Chatterjee, Amruta Subhash and Chandan Roy Sanyal is competing in the Venice Days sidebar and had its premiere on September 8, read a statement.

The film's screening saw a packed house and got a standing ovation with a big round of applause at the end of the screening.

The film festival began on September 2 and will end on Saturday.

Excited about all the bouquets that the film received, Oberoi said that "it was a great feeling to see a packed house for the premiere of our film and to have our work appreciated so much by the audience".

Vikramjit Roy, head of sales and marketing at NFDC , was also delighted with the support the film received at Venice.

"We are elated at the reception received by 'Island City' in Venice and are hoping that this will boost our effort at promoting the film internationally," Roy said.

The film follows three comic-dramatic stories set in Mumbai. The first one is about a middle-aged man who wins the office 'Fun Committee Award', which entitles him to a whole day full of fun.

The second story begins with an autocratic man whose family brings home a television set when he is critically ill and away in a hospital. The third story centres around Aarti whose repetitive existence is slowly making her more and more mechanical and numb.
