The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday issued notice to the union environment ministry and the Uttar Pradesh government on pollution in the Ganga river, seeking reports in the matter in four weeks.

The human rights commission said the right to a safe and clean environment was one of the most important human rights.

"Preserving the environment is not only important for the present generation but also for the generations to come," the NHRC said, taking a suo motu cognizance of the matter.

Issuing notice to the secretary of the union ministry of environment and forests and the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh, the NHRC called for reports in the matter within four weeks.
