Nine people were killed and 12 others injured in Punjab's Amritsar district after a mini-bus rammed into the vehicle in which they were travelling, police said.
The incident took place on Wednesday night on Amritsar-Chowk Mehta road, around 250 km from Chandigarh. The victims include five women and a girl, police said.
The injured rushed to hospital.
Angry people from nearby villages set the mini-bus on fire even as its driver fled from the spot.
The victims were travelling on a 'gharuka', a locally-made illegal vehicle, when the bus hit it.
Police said the 'gharuka' was overloaded.
