The BJP on Tuesday accused the West Bengals ruling Trinamool Congress of attacking its state headquarters and said there was no democracy in Bengal under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

BJP national secretary Sidharth Nath Singh also rubbished charges of "political vendetta" hurled by Banerjee following the arrest of Trinamool Lok Sabha member Sudip Bandyopadhyay by the CBI.

"There is no place for violence in democracy, but when the chief minister and the ruling party indulge in violence, there can be no democracy. Under Mamata there is no democracy in Bengal but only violence and riots," Singh told the media here.

"A large mob led by Trinamool leaders pelted stones on our Bengal headquarters and attacked our members. At least 12 of our people have sustained serious injuries," he said.

Singh said the police personnel preferred to look the other way when the office was attacked.

Referring to the chit fund scam in which several Trinamool leaders have been arrested and interrogated, Singh pointed fingers at Banerjee.

"This attack is a direct result of Bandyopadhyay's arrest and also indicates Mamata's nervousness. She knows the CBI is fast making progress in the investigation and is getting closer to her doorstep," he said.

"Mamata is mistaken if she believes that through violence or allegations she can get her leaders absolved from the charges of chit fund scam. It is she who needs to answer why her police derailed the investigation in scam that the court had to intervene and ask the CBI to probe."

Beside Banerjee and her Trinamool, the Congress too has charged the Modi government with pursuing vendetta politics.

"Every day we see central agencies like the CBI, Enforcement Directorate being pushed and pressurised by none less than the Prime Minister and his office to unleash vendetta against political opponents," said Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.
