The BJP on Thursday maintained the political developments in Tamil Nadu with E. Palaniswami taking over as new Chief Minister was the "AIADMK's internal matter and the Centre had no role in it", while the Congress party said the southern state needs a stable government.

BJP's national secretary Srikant Sharma said: "It is an internal matter of the AIADMK. Whoever they want to select as the Chief Minister of the state is their internal matter. BJP and the Centre has no role to play in this."

"As a party, we expect the newly-sworn Chief Minister will fulfil the aspirations of the people of Tamil Nadu," he added.

Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha said that Tamil Nadu is facing a constitutional crisis and it would continue "until a stable government, which has got the backing of the majority MLAs, is in place".

"Following the conviction of Sasikala, swearing-in of the current Chief Minister, who appears to belong to the majority faction of the AIADMK, is the only option the Governor of the state has," he added.

"He (Governor) had no other option. Ultimately, following the Bommai verdict case, the majority will be tested on the floor of the House," he added.

E. Palaniswami, who belongs to the camp of AIADMK General Secretary V.K. Sasikala, was on Thursday sworn in as the new Chief Minister.

Palaniswami will have to prove his majority in the assembly within 15 days.
