Bangladesh authorities on Monday issued a ban on motorcyclists carrying more pillion riders than one. The step is aimed at preventing militant attacks.

The ban comes as a response to the killing of a top Bangladeshi police officer's wife on Sunday. She was shot dead by suspected militants in Chittagong port city, Xinhua news agency reported.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said the decision has been taken for public safety in view of motorcycles being used to carry out terror attacks.

"Three riders on a motorcycle will be not allowed anymore," he said.

Muslim-majority Bangladesh has been facing a surge in violent attacks in recent years.

A number of secularist writers, bloggers and publishers in Bangladesh have been killed or seriously injured in attacks perpetrated by extremists since 2013.

In most of the cases, it was noticed that the attacks were carried out by motorcycle-riding assailants.
