The Columbia University said US President Barack Obama will return to his alma mater after leaving office in 2017, a media report said.

During an event on Monday, Lee Bollinger, president of the university, said Columbia was looking forward to hosting the president, Xinhua quoted reported citing the official student newspaper Columbia Daily Spectator.

However, Bollinger did not provide further details about what sort of role Obama, a 1983 graduate, would have on the campus.

The relations between Obama and Columbia University was tested earlier this year after Columbia University lost to the University of Chicago in its bid to house Obama's presidential library and museum.

Obama taught law at the University of Chicago before being elected to the Senate in 2004.
