Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday directed the banks to ensure that the common people do not suffer during the deposit and exchange of demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

"Banks must ensure that the people do not face any harassment and delay when they come for deposit or exchange of notes," Patnaik said.

The chief minister on Friday took a review meeting with government and bank officials to take stock of the situation.

He ordered the formation of a state level monitoring group under the finance secretary to monitor that the beneficiaries under various schemes do not suffer due to the demonetisation of the higher currencies.

As about 4,400 panchayats do not have banking facilities in the state, he requested the banks to open temporary counters and facilitate mobile banks for the benefit of people.

The state government would provide support including building infrastructure for functioning of mobile banks and temporary counters, he added.

Patnaik said he would discuss with Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley about the situation in the state.
