Odia communities across the country and abroad on Saturday celebrated Utkala Dibasa to mark the formation of the then Orissa, now Odisha, state on a linguistic basis in 1936.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished people of Odisha on the occasion of Utkala Dibasa.

Hailing the state for its rich culture and glorious history, Modi tweeted: "The people of Odisha are hardworking and have showcased their efficiency in various fields. I pray for the bright future and progress...," he said.

Vice President M. Hamid Ansari also greeted the people and said :"Odisha has a rich cultural heritage reflected in the diversity of its monuments, arts, sculptures, literature, dance and music."

"The state also has a wealth of natural resources. With its industrious people, I am sure that Odisha would continue on the path of economic and social progress," said Ansari.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also wished the people of the state on the auspicious day.

"Our focus is on making Odisha a leading state in the country," tweeted Patnaik.

The foundation day of Odisha is celebrated across the state on April 1 every year after it was carved out of the combined Bengal-Bihar-Orissa province in 1936.

In ancient times, Odisha was named as Utkal which was a part of the Kalinga dynasty.

Several cultural programmes have been organised to commemorate the day across the state.
