A young girl was killed and three other members of her family injured as a storm hit parts of this Himalayan state early Sunday, police said. It also disrupted power supply.

The storm, with a maximum wind speed of 65 km, raged for about nine hours upto around 9 a.m., uprooting trees and electric poles and destroying some houses, said Deputy Inspector General of Police Mandip Singh Toli.

Sikkim North district bore the brunt of the storm. "The entire district has been plunged into darkness," said a police officer.

The 11-year-old girl died when a tree fell on her on the bypass under the Gangrok Sadar police station. Three other injured family members were now being treated at the Gangtok State Hospital.
