One-family rule has affected the nation, BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi said in an interview to Network 18 Friday.

"Sanjaya Baru's book reveals that one family has been running the country. This tradition of governing the country from one power centre has adversely affected the nation," Modi said.

"At one point of time, both central and state governments used to be of the Congress. But when new parties emerged in the states, they did not take it positively. I understand the nuances of centre-state relations, I have suffered because of it," added Modi.

He said he wanted to create a "Team India" which would have the prime minister and all chief ministers.

He added: "It will be like a family".
