The Congress party on Monday gave a breach of privilege notice against Odisha Parliamentary Affairs Minister Bikram Keshari Arukh for misleading the state assembly on the detention of some students of Rama Devi Women's University during Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's visit to the institute.

Moving the motion against the minister, Leader of Opposition Narasingh Mishra of the Congress said Arukh's statement on Saturday that no student was detained during the chief minister's visit was not based on truth and was made intentionally to mislead the house.

Speaker Niranjan Pujari said a decision on the privilege notice would be taken after examining it.

The Congress leader urged the speaker to refer the matter to the privileges committee of the assembly.

The parliamentary affairs minister on Saturday rubbished the claims that some girl students were detained during Naveen Patnaik's visit to inaugurate Rama Devi Women's University here.

The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) reacted to the development cautiously.

BJD legislator Pratap Jena said, "The minister said the students were detained outside the corridor not in any room as is being alleged. The entry to the meeting place was locked. So, there was nothing wrong in the statement given by the minister."

The Congress party has also referred the matter to the National Human Rights Commission. The Bharatiya Janata Party also moved on the issue and made a complaint to the National Commission for Women.
