Over 2 million hectares of land have been afforested under the National Afforestation Programme (NAP), parliament was told on Tuesday.
"An area over 2 million hectare has been afforested with an investment of about Rs.3545 crore under NAP since its launching in year 2000," Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Prakash Javadekar told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
As the government plans to increase tree plantation in the forest areas of the country, it is implementing the NAP in degraded forests at pan-India level through peoples' participation, he added.
The government has also launched the National Mission for a Green India (GIM), which aims to increase forest and tree cover on 5 million hectares of land and further improve the quality of forest cover on another 5 million hectare area.
