At least 3,236 women two-wheeler and pillion riders were issued challans or traffic tickets for not wearing helmets in the national capital, a Delhi Police official said Wednesday.

"The drive started Wednesday morning across the national capital and 3,236 challans were issued to women bikers and scooterists and pillion riders not wearing helmets till 5 p.m.," said an official.

The maximum 928 challans were issued from the southern range, 785 from central, 426 from eastern, 528 from northern and 569 from western range, said the official.

He also said the drive will continue.

Following a recent amendment in the Delhi Motor Vehicle Rules, women will be prosecuted if they do not wear helmets while riding two-wheelers.

Sikh women have been exempted from this rule on religious grounds.
