Over 3,000 heavy vehicle drivers prosecuted in Delhi

Over 3,000 heavy vehicle drivers were prosecuted for rash and dangerous driving in the city during the night hours, Delhi Police said Thursday.

A total of 3,265 commercial transport vehicle drivers were prosecuted, and of these 2,100 faced action for dangerous and rash driving during a six-day drive launched by Delhi Police from April 18.

According to Additional Commissioner of Police Anil Shukla, to enforce discipline among commercial transport vehicle drivers and to ensure they respect the "Right of Way" of other motorists, the drive was launched on selected 11 corridors, including national highways.

"It has been observed that during night hours, the commercial transport vehicle drivers indulge in over-speeding, dangerous driving, reckless driving, red light jumping, lane violations and wrong overtaking," Shukla said.

 

Police also said 47 cases were registered under Section 279 of Indian Penal Code against the drivers of such vehicles for reckless driving and 531 commercial transport vehicles impounded during the special drive.

Significantly, three CRPF women troopers were killed and 17 others injured when a truck rammed into the bus they were travelling in early Wednesday morning in a west Delhi area. The truck driver is yet to be arrested.
