More than 4,700 migrants, rescued in the Mediterranean on Saturday and Sunday, arrived on Monday in Italy, where they will receive medical care and temporary accommodation.

Italian media reported that the passengers landed in several Italian ports, among them Cagliari, on the island of Sardinia, which received the highest number of migrants, a total of 963, including 70 children, Efe reported.

The port of Messina, Sicily, received a group of 225 people, while another Sicilian port, Palermo, received 548 migrants, including 130 unaccompanied minors.

This group of migrants was rescued in the Strait of Sicily on Saturday and Sunday by the Italian navy and coast guard, with support from ships from the joint European migration operation.
