The Pakistan government, along with the Pakistan Ulema Council, is considering releasing non-combatant Taliban prisoners without accommodating any demands from the militant group.

This was discussed Thursday during a meeting between Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz sharif and and a 10-member delegation of Pakistan Ulema Council led by Allama Tahir Ashrafi, The Nation daily reported.

Sharif said during the meeting that he wanted to resolve issues with the Taliban through reconciliation and not by any kind of bloodshed. Matters related to the ongoing situation in Karachi along with law and order situation were also discussed in the meeting.

The prime minister said that demands of Taliban for peace are under consideration which would be discussed by the new government committee.

"We have demanded the government release non-militant prisoners as this would give a positive message," Maulana Ashrafi said.

The Ulema Council has agreed with the prime minister's idea of freeing the non-combatant Taliban prisoners as it thinks this move would lead to a settlement between the militant group and the Pakistan government.

Sharif added that extremism in the country could only be eradicated by following the true spirit of Islam.
