Pakistani troops started shelling and firing on Indian positions across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu district on Thursday evening, sparking off an exchange of fire that was still on, an army official said.

"Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation on the LoC in Pallanwala sector of Jammu district today evening.

"Pakistan shelling and firing started at 7.15 p.m. They are using 82 mm mortars and automatics to target our positions," defence spokesman, Lt. Col. Manish Mehta told IANS here.

"Our troops are effectively and befittingly retaliating," he said, adding firing exchanges are still going on in the area.
