Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam was elected the AIADMK legislature party leader early on Tuesday, to succeed Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa who died on Monday night.
A meeting of AIADMK's MLAs was to be held at 6 p.m. on Monday but was postponed.
Panneerselvam is expected to submit the letter of support extended by his party lawmakers to Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao.
According to a party official, no other decision was taken at the meeting.
After Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital in September, Panneerselvam -- who has officiated as Chief Minister earlier too -- began looking after the portfolios held by her.
