Tamil Nadu Police Tuesday took into custody a girl student of a private medical college over the alleged suicide of a junior student in her hostel room, an official said.

Yogalakshmi, a 19-year-old paramedical student at a private college, committed suicide in her hostel room here Monday evening.

On receipt of a complaint from Yogalakshmi's parents about their daughter allegedly being ragged by her senior, police took the senior student Kotteeswari into custody for further inquiry.

Police recovered a 16-page note from Yogalakshmi's room indicating ragging by her senior.

Yogalakshmi's parents told reporters here that they suspect foul play as different versions were given to them by the college authorities.

"First, college officials told us that our daughter consumed poison. Later, we were told that our daughter hanged herself from the ceiling fan," said Yogalakshmi's father Kamala Kannan.

He said Yogalakshmi complained of ragging and harassment by seniors, particularly by Kotteeswari.
