Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Sunday arrived on a visit to Jammu and Kashmir's Ladakh region and reviewed the state of defence preparedness.

A defence ministry spokesman said: "Parrikar arrived at Leh today (Sunday) on a one day visit to the Ladakh region."

"He was accompanied by army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag and was received by Army Commander, Northern Command and General Officer Commanding, Fire and Fury Corps.

"The Ladakh region is known for its extremely rugged and inhospitable terrain and extreme climate and contains within its confines some of the most difficult frontiers of the country.

"On arrival, the minister interacted with soldiers at the Rinchen auditorium after which he was briefed by the General Officer Commanding, Fire & Fury Corps on the prevailing military situation and state of defence preparedness along the borders of Ladakh," the spokesman said.

"The minister also visited the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research in Leh and was briefed on the ongoing projects by the institute."

Parrikar will return to Delhi on Monday.
