The Philippines government has earmarked over one billion pesos ($22.83 million) to finance a programme aimed at eradicating malnutrition among school children, an official said Sunday.

Philippines' communication secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the school-based food programme is an initiative taken by the National Nutrition Council under the department of health along with other departments and the Commission on Higher Education, Xinhua reported.

Under this programme, school canteens are given guidelines on how to provide proper nutrition to school children. This includes not serving junk foods and only giving nutrition-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables.
