The petition, filed by social activists Nutan Thakur and Anupam Pandey, said such a move "will help enhance the service of the police stations and increase the sense of security among women complainants and victims".

"CCTVs in women's lock-ups will act as a deterrent for any criminal act being committed against any arrested woman," the public interest litigation (PIL) added.

The petitioners also pleaded with the court to issue directions to the Uttar Pradesh Police asking them not to use women's lock-ups in police stations for storing arms, ammunition and case files.

A bench of Justice Uma Nath Singh and Justice V.K. Dixit will hear the case Friday.
