Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt turned down an offer to play Edwin Epps in "12 Years A Slave" because of his kids.

The 50-year-old, who has co-produced the movie, was worried about the shocking imagery and negative impact it might have on his six children.

"I didn't want my kids to see me in this role," Pitt said in a statement.

The role of Edwin Epps was then given to actor Michael Fassbender.

Set in the 1900s "12 Years A Slave" is the story of Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, who is abducted and sold into slavery.

The movie will hit Indian theatres Jan 31.
