Plane crash in Germany claims five lives

Five people, including a child, were killed when a small plane crashed in the Ruhr region of western Germany, media reports said.

The Piper plane crashed at 5 p.m. on a meadow near Dortmund in North Rhine-Westphalia, Xinhua reported.

Two men, two women and one child were killed. Three other children were seriously injured and transferred to hospital by a helicopter, the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung reported, citing police sources.

The accident site lies between the cities of Wickede and Frondenberg. Some of the victims were trapped in the crashed plane and had to be resuced. Tens of rescuers, several vehicles and helicopters were at the site.

 

The plane was apparently approaching a small regional airport nearby, said the newspaper. According to witnesses, it touched a tree shortly before the crash.
