Some 11,000 people are to submit a petition protesting against the sale and import of cosmetics tested on animals, an NGO said Thursday.

"Our government has rightly recognised that animal testing of cosmetics is morally unjustifiable. It is vital that we do not allow Indian shops to become the dumping ground for animal-tested cosmetics from other countries," said Alokparna Sengupta of Humane Society International that will submit the petition to Drug Controller General of India G.N. Singh.

"As October is the month in which Mahatma Gandhi, a proponent of ahimsa (non-violence) was born, it is the perfect time for India to ban the import and sale of such cosmetics," Sengupta added .

Some European countries, as also Israel, have already banned the sale of such cosmetics.
