Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tributes to all those who played a role in India's victory in the 1965 war against Pakistan, then prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri included.
"Whenever the 1965 war is mentioned, it is natural to remember Lal Bahadur Shastriji," he said in his radio address Mann Ki Baat. "It is also natural to remember his 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' (slogan).
"It is natural to remember the martyrs who held the tricolour high. I salute all who were related to the victory... I salute all bravehearts," he said.
Modi added: "Such historic incidents always inspire us."
India began nearly a month-long commemoration of the 1965 war on August 28, the day India captured Hajipir Pass five decades back.
