Police on Wednesday detained and later released 60-70 students from near India Gate after they took part in a candle light vigil in support of Dalit student Rohith Vemula who committed suicide.

"The students were brought to the Tilak Marg police station around 6 p.m. and released around 8.30. They were detained because they tried to march towards India Gate without permission," said a police officer.

Vemula committed suicide in Hyderabad University on January 17 after being suspended following an alleged clash with an ABVP leader.
