Chandigarh, April 19 (IANS) Three separate police teams were formed Friday to arrest a Chandigarh police constable who shot dead his lover's husband and her mother-in-law, and injured another woman in Haryana's Sonepat district Thursday, police said.

Police constable Basant Kumar used a rifle stolen from the stocks of Chandigarh police to shoot Sandeep Kumar, 25, and his mother Roshni, 55, after forcibly entering their house in Deepalpur village in Sonepat district, some 200 km from here.

After committing the crime, Basant abducted Sandeep's wife Sarita and fled from the spot in a car.

According to police, Basant was having an affair with Sarita and they had eloped once earlier. He was unhappy over her marriage with Sandeep. Sarita and Sandeep got married April 15.

"Basant is a resident of Gorad village in Sonepat district. He had come in a car with an accomplice. He tried to take away Sarita forcibly but when her husband resisted, he opened fire on him and his mother," Deputy Superintendent of Police Rakam Singh said.

"Another woman, Parkashi Devi, who was in the house at the time also sustained injuries and was admitted to hospital," he added.

Basant, 27, was with Indian Reserve Battalion in Chandigarh and had not reported for duty for the last 15 days.

Haryana Police had recovered a bag from the crime spot which contained Basant's uniform and official belt.

Police said Sarita and Basant were in love with each other but their families were against the relationship. In February, Sarita had eloped with Basant and they had stayed together for nearly a month before the girl's family took her away.

Chandigarh police have suspended Basant. He was staying in a rented house in Sector 20 of Chandigarh.
