Guerrillas attacked a policeman Tuesday morning in Kashmir's Anantnag town and snatched away his rifle.
Police said guerrillas fired at a constable in Lal Chowk area of Anantnag, 54 km from Srinagar.
"The constable was on routine duty in the area when militants fired at him, injuring him critically. "The injured constable has been taken to Srinagar for treatment," the officer said.
Sources in the town told IANS the guerrillas took away the constable's rifle after the attack.
Markets, traffic and banks were open in the busy Lal Chowk area of the Anantnag town when the attack on the constable occurred.
Tension gripped the area as people started deserting streets and markets in the town after the incident.
No guerrilla group has yet taken the responsibility for the attack.
