A police constable was injured Friday evening in south Kashmir's Anantnag district in a hit-and-run attack by separatist guerrillas.

Police said militants fired at a police party near Junglat Mandi (forest depot) in Anantnag district, 54 km from here, Friday evening, injuring a constable.

"The injured man has been removed for treatment to a hospital in Srinagar," the officer said.

Panic gripped the south Kashmir Anantnag town after the firing incident, as people closed businesses and rushed home. Traffic also thinned out.

No arrests have so far been made.
