A leader of the Awami National Party (ANP), Ziauddin was gunned down Sunday by unknown assailants in Orangi Town in the Pakistani city of Karachi, media reported.

According to police, the leader was going to offer prayers at a mosque when the gunmen targeted him, Geo News reported.

A spokesman for the Pakhtun nationalist party said that Ziauddin, an ANP district president, was already receiving threats.

The body was shifted to a hospital and later handed over to the family after medico-legal formalities.

A large number of ANP workers staged a protest outside the chief minister house and demanded of the authorities to arrest the killers.

The road leading to the chief minister house was blocked for traffic owing to the protest.

The ANP called off the protest following negotiations with the provincial authorities.
