A record 70 per cent turnout is expected in Delhi, said an Election Commission official Wednesday, attributing it to brisk voting in the last two hours at polling stations.

"The way polling has gone till now, there is no doubt the percentage might cross 70 per cent," an official told IANS.

The polling was moderate in the initial hours, but it started picking up after 3 p.m.

Polling was in full swing across the capital, which by 4 p.m. recorded 55 per cent. Voters lined up at the polling centres across the capital and waited patiently to exercise their franchise.

In the 2008 assembly elections, a total 57.58 per cent polling was recorded.

The highest polling percentage - 61.75 per cent - was recorded in Delhi's first assembly elections of 1993.
