Pope Francis said on Wednesday that at a time of year driven by consumerism and individualism, people ought to turn to those in need with acts of generosity and kindness.

The Pope said the Christmas season ran the risk of becoming a mundane event centred around a celebration as opposed to focusing on the birth of Jesus, Efe news reported.

At the weekly audience in the Paul VI hall, the Pontiff rejected the "noise of consumerism", adding that Christmas should mark the triumph of humility over arrogance, simplicity over abundance.

"During these days we rush around perhaps more than at other times of the year," he said. "But this is the opposite of what Jesus would want."

The Pope urged believers to avoid being blinded by shimmering artificial lights, gifts and meals, and suggested giving these to someone in more need.
