An exhibition of picture postcards and photographs from the Indian subcontinent from 1890s to 1947 opened at the Art Heritage Gallery here on Wednesday.

Titled "Globetrotters: Early Postcards from the Indian Subcontinent", the exhibition captures the story of photographers, artists and printers who were involved in the publishing and dissemination of postcards.

Divided into two gallery spaces, it has rare postcards and photographs from Presidency states and the larger South Asian ambit including North West Frontier Province and Ceylon.

It also has visual documents from Simla, Ooty and Kashmir.

"Globetrotters" highlights themes of urbanism, art practice and popular culture, industrialization and tourism, social transformation and, eventually, the rise of freedom and nationalism.

The exhibition is accompanied by, and borrows from "Paper Jewels: Postcards from the Raj" authored by Omar Khan, who calls postcards as the Instagram of that time.

The month-long exhibition is held in collaboration with the The Alkazi Foundation for the Arts and will run till November 17.
