Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu has called for a meeting with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and union Raod Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to work out a development plan for the railways in Mumbai, a city synonymous with congested suburban trains.
Speaking at a function at the Karmali railway station, a short distance from Panaji, Prabhu said the meeting would take place in the next few days.
"We are going to take a decision about whole Maharashtra and Mumbai development plan for railways.
"The Maharashtra government, central government and local authorities like municipality and police will work together in an integrated way to bring about relief to the over-burdened railway network in India," he said.
Prabhu also said providing relief to passengers who "travel in overburdened railway network in India" was top priority for him.
Fast tracking the development of Mumbai and clearing its public transport systems from congestion was one of the poll promises made by the BJP in its state election campaign.
