President condoles death of ex-MP Amitava Nandy

President Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday condoled the death of former MP and veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Amitava Nandy, a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement said.

In a condolence message to Nandy's wife, Ila, the president said: "I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of your husband who was a friend and colleague of long years."

"Nandy was always concerned about the welfare of the people in West Bengal. He was known for his varied interests in sports as well as various art and cultural activities. In his passing away, the nation has lost a personality who was always in touch with the grassroots of society," he said.

 

"Kindly accept my heartfelt condolences and convey the same to other members of your family. I pray to the almighty to give you and your family the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss," he added.

Nandy, 71 was battling with cancer and passed away Aug 15. He was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha from Dum Dum constituency in North 24 Parganas and played an important role in the implementation of the metro rail expansion from Dum Dum to Dakshineshwar.
