President Pranab Mukherjee will on April 11 inaugurate the northeast festival 'Songs and Dances of Northeast' showcasing the rich cultural ethnicity and diversity of the region, an official here said on Tuesday.

The festival, intending to "enhance the multi-ethnic character of the country's capital and dispel impressions that it was hostile to outsiders, particularly people from the northeast", is an initiative by the Meghalaya government and the North Eastern Council.

"The event has a special significance considering that more than 5,000 students from northeastern states are enrolled in various under-graduate and post-graduate programs in Delhi University, and an equal number are studying in JNU, JMI and other such institutions," an official statement said.

"The event is conceptualized and designed to bind together the diverse culture and heritage of the northeast on a common platform and connect with rest of India," M. War Nongbri, director, art and culture, government of Meghalaya, said in the statement.

Nongbri added that the northeast region is known for its diverse music, cultural richness, colours of traditions and the sweet melodies of folklore.

The daylong festival will give visitors a taste of everything from the northeast -- from food and songs to dances and its culture. This festival will also host a discussion on 'Integrating North-East India through education' where speakers would discuss ways in which education can be used as an important tool.
