Prince George, son of Prince William and Duchess Catherine, was christened at the St. James's Palace Wednesday.

He was baptised by the Archbishop of Canterbury, while the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Prince Harry as well as Kate's family gathered for the private ceremony at the Chapel Royal, Xinhua reported.

Also present at the event were seven godparents of the newborn, including one being Prince William's cousin and the rest all friends of the royal couple.

After the ceremony, the British monarch posed for a four-generation group photo, the first of its kind since 1890s, according to media reports.

George, the third in line to the throne, was born in London July 22. He was seen wearing a lace and satin gown, which media said was a replica of one made for Queen Victoria's eldest daughter in 1841.

The Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William were baptised at Buckingham Palace, but this time William and Kate decided to break the tradition and have their son christened in the chapel where Princess Diana's coffin rested before her funeral.
