Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung planted 250 saplings on World Environment Day here Thursday and asked the people of Delhi to promote plantation drives in their neighbourhoods.

Jung visited the Garhi Mandu forest which is spread across 800 acres near the Yamuna river, enriching the environment of east, north-east Delhi and north-west Delhi.

Jung was accompanied by 100 children from six Delhi schools.

The Governor told the children about the importance of forest cover, especially in cities, and urged them to carry out similar plantation drives near their homes.

"Our environment is precious and we must all contribute towards conserving it. We owe it to our future generations and must do what we can to contribute to a greener tomorrow," Jung said.

The 250 saplings included fruit-bearing trees, which will attract birds like Greylag Goose, Northern Pintail, Ruddy Shelduck, Rosy starling, Golden Oriole.

World Environment Day is celebrated annually June 5 throughout the world with the objective to sensitize people on environment issues, its protection and conservation.
