Goa assembly Deputy Speaker Vishnu Wagh on Tuesday said prostitution has become a real menace in the coastal state and that there was a nexus between a section of police and pimps.
"It (prostitution) has turned into a real menace, which is bringing ignominy and shame to our state. According to the feedback I receive, some police officers also are helping the pimps in this trade," Wagh, a BJP lawmaker, said in a Facebook post.
"The government has to tackle this matter seriously," the legislator from St. Andre assembly constituency said.
According to a recent survey by an anti-trafficking NGO, nearly half of the 316 women rescued from the flesh trade in Goa between 2010-14 were freed from the popular beach stretch of Candolim-Baga in north Goa, which hosts a bulk of the four million tourists visiting Goa every year.
