Expressing solidarity with the students of Jadavpur University in Kolkata, over 300 students of different universities here staged a protest against alleged police atrocities.

The protesting students demanded action against police for assaulting students and resignation of the University's vice-chancellor Abhijit Chakraborty.

Several students of the Jadavpur University were hospitalised after police allegedly beat them up Sep 17 for laying siege to the vice chancellor's office, seeking a fresh inquiry into the purported sexual harassment of a female student.

The students from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University and alumni of Jadavpur University gathered outside Banga Bhawan in central Delhi, raised slogans like 'Oppression may be your right, protest is our privilege' and formed a peace chain.

Criticising heavy police deployment outside Banga Bhawan, Shambhavi said in a tweet: "As usual Delhi Police has been deployed against peaceful protesters. My question still stands, police come in large numbers to block us. Nobody comes when a girl is molested."

The students later marched to Jantar Mantar, the protest site in the heart of capital.

"Police tried to block us earlier now we have reached Jantar Mantar. We want action to be taken immediately, they cannot treat students in such manner," Shafqat Hussain Butt, joint secretary of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union, told IANS.
