Mexico City, Aug 9 (IANS/EFE) Organisations representing journalists, artists and students staged a protest in Mexico City demanding justice for slain photojournalist Ruben Espinosa.

About 250 people, including reporters covering the demonstration and passers-by, gathered on Saturday at the Juarez Monument to condemn the killing of Espinosa and four women in a Mexico City apartment on July 31.

Some of the protesters, the majority of whom were young people, placed duct tape with the word "Justicia" written on it over their mouths.

Speakers from many groups addressed the crowd, with one calling for Veracruz Governor Javier Duarte to be hauled before Federal District Attorney's Office prosecutors as the suspected intellectual author of the killings.

Both Espinosa and human rights activist Nadia Vera, one of the women victims, had received threats in Veracruz, the speaker said.

The bodies of Espinosa and the four women were found with gunshot wounds and signs of torture inside the apartment in the central neighbourhood of Narvarte.

The 31-year-old Espinosa, who was working for the Cuartoscuro photo agency and the Proceso news weekly, had returned to Mexico City in June after eight years as a journalist in Xalapa, capital of Veracruz state.

Espinosa said he was forced to flee due to death threats and harassment, friends and colleagues said.

A few days before he was killed, Espinosa expressed concern that he was being pursued by someone in the capital, Cuartoscuro director Pedro Valtierra told EFE.
