The NHRC Tuesday asked the Maharashtra prison authorities to provide adequate medical care to G.N. Saibaba, a wheelchair-bound Delhi University professor who was arrested for his alleged links with Maoists.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notice to the secretary of prison administration in Maharashtra and the Nagpur central jail superintendent, directing them to provide adequate medical treatment to Saibaba.

A professor at Ram Lal Anand College, Saibaba was arrested here May 9 by Maharashtra Police.

"We have also decided to send an officer from our investigation division to Maurice Nagar and Civil Lines police stations in Delhi to collect copies of records maintained at the police stations at the time of his arrest," said a statement from the NHRC.

As per complaints received by the NHRC, Saibaba suffers from permanent post-polio paralysis of the legs and is 90 percent disabled. He is also a heart patient with high blood pressure and suffers from spinal pain.

"He is in a solitary cell and is not getting medication," alleged one of the complaints.
